Mesosystem Leads Shrimp4NanoCosmetics Project to Develop Sustainable and Innovative Cosmetic Solutions

Mesosystem, a global reference in medical cosmetics, has announced its leadership in the Shrimp4NanoCosmetics project. This disruptive initiative combines sustainability, technological innovation, and advanced science to transform seafood industry waste into high-value cosmetic solutions.

The project, which will run for 36 months, involves collaboration with leading scientific institutions such as the Applied Biomolecular Sciences Unit (UCIBIO) - Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP), the University of the Azores (UAç), and the REQUIMTE/LAQV research center.

Cosmetic Solutions from Waste: Sustainable Innovation

Shrimp4NanoCosmetics aims to investigate and develop new methodologies for extracting bioactive compounds from shrimp shells — byproducts currently discarded by the seafood processing industry.

This ambitious project seeks to optimize chemical, enzymatic, and mechanical technologies to extract compounds such as astaxanthin, chitin, and chitosan, known for their anti-aging, antioxidant, and regenerative benefits in cosmetics.

The extracted compounds will be incorporated into innovative cosmetic formulations based on lipid nanoparticles and chitosan, delivering highly effective products with unique benefits for users.

This model represents a circular economy solution by transforming waste into high-value raw materials for the cosmetic market, promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Scientific Excellence

With a structured work plan over three years (Oct. 2024 – Nov. 2027), the project will leverage the most advanced technologies to ensure efficient and eco-friendly extraction of bioactive compounds.

The methodologies developed will not only add value to seafood industry byproducts but also implement techniques that minimize the use of harsh chemicals, aligning with global trends in sustainable and responsible cosmetics.

The consortium led by Mesosystem includes collaboration with three recognized scientific institutions:

  • Applied Biomolecular Sciences Unit (UCIBIO) - Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP): A leader in pharmaceutical and cosmetic research.
  • University of the Azores (UAç): A specialist in marine resources and biotechnology.
  • REQUIMTE/LAQV: A center of excellence in chemical and environmental research, focused on sustainable solutions.

Market Impact and Sustainability

Shrimp4NanoCosmetics aligns with global trends in conscious consumption, addressing the growing demand for effective, innovative, and environmentally responsible cosmetic products. The expected outcomes include the launch of a line of cosmetic products combining advanced technology with proven benefits, while simultaneously reducing industrial waste and promoting more sustainable practices in the cosmetic industry.

Mesosystem Statement

With Shrimp4NanoCosmetics, we take a decisive step toward sustainable innovation, combining advanced science with environmental responsibility. This project reflects our commitment to leading the future of cosmetics by turning environmental challenges into opportunities for value creation” says Mesosystem.
